Yes, separating them allows them develop their own identities. They become more independent. It forces them to socialize with other classmates instead of just playing with each other. They'll have plenty of time at home to do things together.

Schools have found twins get better grades when they're in the same class. I assume this is because they can study the same material with each other. Same tests, same books, lesson plans, etc.  Just don't put them in seats next to one another. Emphasize this to your school administrator so they understand the benefits of it.
