Track will make you faster and stronger which can only make you better when you're back on the field. Keep strengthening while you run track. If it doesn't get in the way of football practice go for it. Just keep your priorities straight. Make sure you know whether you're a football player who's running track or a track athlete who plays football.

Yes, but only certain players should run track. It would be comical to watch offensive linemen doing the 5 meter dash. Or cross-country running using a calendar as the clock. Then again running backs should run the hurdles. And certain quarterbacks should run sprints. At least until they get an offensive lineman who can letter in the 5 meter dash.
