Several years ago Ohio Gov. Kasich facilitated the 1st sale of a public prison to a private corporation in the US. It was a disaster that led to a massive overcrowding problem. The company was looking to maximize profits. and didn't add enough corrections officers (but they sure added plenty more bunks!). They just see prisoners as dollar signs! Investigators from the state went undercover and found that many of the prisoners were living in horrible conditions, some didn't even have access to running water and they had to crap in plastic bags! With the jail shortstaffed it was easy to move drugs into it for the inmates (they'd just toss tote bags full of drugs over the fences and the inmates would scoop it up and distribute it to all their buddies). In the first few month after the sale there was also twice the assaults both between prisoners and on the staff.

When the jails are no longer run by the government there's also less investment in rehabilitation of the criminals so they get into a vicious cycle where they get arrested over and over, sending their lives into a downward spiral many times and destroying families. We need to reform the criminal justice system to keep people who shouldn't be behind bars out of prison and that just isn't happening when the corporations are fighting to increase the prison population in order to line their pockets!

No doubt, they're always saying to save the environment by taking the bus. Well, duh, incentive it! It's not that costly for cities anyway. In Canada they have free healthcare but we can't afford free public transportation? WTF

We shouldn't force immigrants to speak a new language here if they don't want to. Let them retain the culture, traditions and customs from their native countries and bring them to this country. But their lives may be harder if they can't communicate effectively with most in the US. They have to keep that in mind.

Alimony serves a legitimate purpose in the right instances, therefore it should not be totally abolished. Some spouses have devoted their adult years keeping the house and rearing children rather than developing their job skills. Then one spouse decides to ditch that dependent spouse. What happens? The spouse with no job prospects becomes a drain on society, perhaps going on welfare or slipping into poverty because the only jobs he or she can hold is a menial one. Alimony is not needed when both sposes have equal opportunity to move on with their lives and become gainfully employed. But alimony in fair when one spouse has devoted his/her entire life to the marital enterprise and then is cut loose in a divorce with no reasonable prospect of survival. Keep alimony but impose it equitably.

If something is compulsory by law there must be legal consequences to not doing that something. That means either a fine or imprisonment for not voting. Are really going to do such a thing. Besides, forcing someone to go into a polling booth against his/her will will likely result in wasted votes or worse votes for the worst person on the ballot. You can try to force a person into the booth, but you cannot force that person to vote responsibly and responsible voting is what we need.

Many lives may be destroyed by alcohol but many more are not. Alcohol can be used responsibly even though many many times it is not. Prohibition gave us direct proof of what will happen if alcohol is made illegal. Making it illegal again will only force us to go through the same painfull lessons we went through during Prohibition. And even with those problems, the consumption of alcohol was not stopped. So why go through that again. Unfortunately, the problems caused by making alcohol illegal are far greater than those caused by keeping it legal.

One thing that sets this country apart from all others is the right of an individual to criticize the government and the country itself. These rights are embodied in the First Amend to the US Constitution which include freedom of speech and the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. Burning the flag is a symbolic way of doing both. So if you want to jail or fine a person for burning the flag, you might as well jail or fine that person for engaging in free speech or petitioning the government for redress of grievances. Remember, if you want free speech for yourself, you have to allow it for everyone and that necessarily means that there will be speech that you won't like. And that is no different than when you say something that might offend someone else.

We need gun control laws. The gun lobby is hiding behind the 2nd amendment. They're manipulating how we interpret it. Congress should take action and deal with this problem once and for all. The US needs to set an example for other countries to follow. Many hunters get this feeling of power when they shoot for sport. Is this sport worth allowing all the gangsters to cowardly shoot people to feel that same surge of power? I think not.

Military-style assault weapons give gunmen the ability to quickly fire many rounds without reloading. The shootings in Aurora and Tucson show there's a need to regulate these guns. There was a 1994 Assault Weapons Ban that curbed crime and violence. A study found that ban was effective in reducing gun murders by 6.7%. Assault weapons were used in 2/3 less crimes from 1994 - 2003. Stop the senseless deaths.
